During autumn, Victoria’s small towns entice countless people to come savour their vibrant gardens, incredible walking trails, quaint eateries and crisp cool air. Among the very best is Bright — the clue, as they say, is in the name. Located in the Ovens Valley on the Great Alpine Road, this small town is an autumn enthusiast’s dream come true, offering a striking display of European deciduous trees that are slated to hit their seasonal peak over the coming weeks. The cooler temperatures in the thriving alpine town are perfect for exploring the local trails or soaking up the scenery at a riverside cafe. The town even has a dedicated autumn festival to its name so it’s arguably the place to be as the seasons change. Here’s how to make the most of an autumn trip to Bright.
Things to do in Bright this autumn

As locals and visitors will attest, Bright is best experienced in autumn, with charming main streets enveloped in brilliant shades of gold, orange and red. The most practical way to experience it is on foot or by bike. To start, the Canyon Walk is a 3km loop in the heart of town that follows the Ovens River, winding past sections of native bush, deciduous trees and a small canyon. To soak in more of that golden autumn glow, head to Higgins Lookout, for an elevated perspective of the Ovens Valley blanketed in gold and crimson leaves.
Cycling is another fun autumn activity, particularly along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. The section from Bright to Porepunkah is flat, sealed, and roughly 6kms each way, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Along the way, you’ll be treated to scenic views, lush trees and rows of bright yellow poplars.

For more autumn foliage, Delany Avenue is a must-visit with rows of scarlet oaks and Himalayan cedars running the length of the street. The instagram-famous spot is located directly on the main street entering Bright and serves as a focal point for the town’s autumn festival. The vibrant foliage isn’t the only draw during this time, as the town hosts the huge ten-day Bright Autumn Festival to mark the season. Set to take place from April 24 to May 3 in 2026, the event features everything from local markets to art exhibits, gardens bursting with colour and even a vibrant parade.

Getting there
Bright is around a 3.5 to 4-hour drive from Melbourne, depending on traffic, via the Hume Freeway and Great Alpine Road. The drive is especially scenic in autumn. If you’re not driving, public transport is still manageable with a bit of planning. Catch a train from Southern Cross Station to Wangaratta, then hop on a connecting V/Line coach that will take you the rest of the way to Bright. Services are limited, so it’s worth checking times in advance. Plan your travels on Public Transport Victoria.
