The historic Campbell Arcade has reopened to the public. This 70-year-old space was closed in 2022, in order to build the connecting link for pedestrians between Flinders Street Station and the future Town Hall Station. While it was closed, the arcade went through an extensive restoration, with repairs to heritage features and major upgrades around the space. You can now access this underground passageway from Degraves Street or Flinders Street Station.
Campbell Arcade reopened
This arcade was the first major public construction project in Melbourne after World War II, and it was completed in 1955. During the restoration, heritage features such as the display windows, the tiled shop fronts and the granite columns were repaired and cleans. The arcade also received major upgrades to the lighting, ventilation, fire and safety systems, in order to make the space safe for pedestrians.
There are eight shopfronts within the arcade, and businesses are expected to move in and open later this year.
“The revamped Campbell Arcade will offer a unique passageway between Flinders Street and the new Town Hall Station – and is another big milestone as we build towards the opening of the Metro Tunnel later this year,” said Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams.
Once Town Hall Station opens, passengers will be able to move between stations without needing to tap off.
Town Hall Station is still under construction, with the Metro Tunnel currently expected to open in late 2025. Learn more about the Metro Tunnel project here.
