Craving a day at the beach? If you’d like to leave behind the crowds in Melbourne, and you’re looking for a more quiet place to dip your toes in the water, why don’t you escape to the secluded beach known as Childers Cove? This hidden gem, located about 25 minutes away from Warrnambool, is often overlooked by the more famous attractions along the Great Ocean Road, like the 12 Apostles or Gibson Steps. But, this rugged beach has plenty to offer, with picturesque views, flat sand and cool caves.

Childers Cove
The cove was the site of a tragic accident, and was named after the wooden vessel, Children, which struck the reefs close to shore in 1839. The barque ran ashore in hurricane-force winds, leading to 16 deaths and 22 survivors.
Park your car, and descend down the steep steps to see this small but mighty beach. Framed by limestone cliffs on three sides, you’ll feel completely isolated as you stroll down the 100-metre-long site. Sit on the golden sand, soak in the sunshine and watch as the waves sweep onto the shore. At low tide, head to the edge of the beach and take in the view from the shade of a little cave.
Please note, that this beach is not patrolled, so there aren’t any lifesavers. There is also a permanent rip that drains out of the cove. As a result, swimming is not advised.
Unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed at Childers Cove.
Sandy Cove

While you’re in the area, make a detour to visit the nearby Sandy Cove. As you can guess from the name, this peaceful beach has a lot more sand. It also has a trio of sandstone stacks for you to admire, making for some Insta-worthy moments. Dogs on leashes are welcome to come along on your beach adventure.
Both Childers Cove and Sandy Cove are a part of the Bay of Islands Coastal Park. Continue to explore this area for more beaches, clifftop walks and scenic lookouts.
