After wowing us with their icy performance, Crystal, last year, Cirque du Soleil is coming back to Australia with another round of awe-inspiring acrobatic acts. This time, they’re whisking us away to an imaginary Mexico. In this surreal world between dreams and reality, you’ll see a tapestry of vibrant locations as a traveller meets a variety of mystifying characters. The show, LUZIA, is also the first touring production by Cirque du Soleil that artistically incorporates water into the acrobatic performance. See it in Melbourne from March 24 to May 19.
LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil
In this magical production, you’ll encounter several places, characters and sounds that are inspired by both classical and contemporary Mexico. The name of the show comes from ‘luz’, or light in Spanish, and ‘lluvia’, or rain. Water was a source of inspiration for the show which added a new level of technical complexity. See acrobats use a Cyr wheel to roll and spin in the rain and watch an aerialist suspend from a trapeze through the downpour. All 10,000 litres of water used during the show drops down into a basin below the stage, where it is filtered, disinfected and reused.
You can also look forward to clowns, contortionists, jugglers, aerialists, puppets and more.
The cast and crew is made up of a whopping 115 people from 26 countries, with 47 artists in the show. There’s 1000 vibrant costume pieces on stage and an energetic Latin American score composed by Simon Carpentier.
The show runs for 100 minutes and has a 25 minute intermission.
