Hear the bells of Notre Dame echo through St Kilda: CLOC’s ambitious take on Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame raises the curtain at The National Theatre this May in one of Melbourne’s grandest, most heart-stirring productions yet.
This soaring stage adaptation, inspired by Victor Hugo’s classic novel and score by the powerhouse duo Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, will fill the historic theatre with sweeping choral harmonies, emotional storytelling and a timeless quest for acceptance.
“At its heart, this tory remind us of the importance of compassion and courage,” says CLOC President Ric Birkett. “Community theatre thrives when people come together in the pursuit of excellence, and this production is a shining example of that collaboration.”
Directed by Shaun Kingma, the production promises to blend that grandeur with heart—complete with a vast ensemble and on-stage choir that’ll transport audience straight to Quasimodo’s world of hidden ongoings. Brace for show-stopping arias, visceral stakes and visuals that do justice to one of literature’s most enduring tales.
Faithful to the story’s deeply human themes, CLOC is proudly partnering with disability consultant Tayla Ham and Auslan Stage Left to ensure this production rings true to its values of inclusion and accessibility. Audiences can also look forward to an Auslan-interpreted performance on Wednesday, 20th May.
