Ellis and George Raymond Johnson (also designer of Melbourne’s Meat Market, Collingwood Town Hall and the North Melbourne Town Hall), and built in 1873 after the gold rush era. It is a 1992 Heritage Victoria-designated spot, mirroring Melbourne’s rapid urban expansion.
The venue boasts rich ornamentation, a fine example of the Free Classical style of Victorian architecture. With the merge of the City of Fitzroy with the Cities of Collingwood and Richmond and the creation of the City of Yarra, the town hall now functions as secondary offices, service centre and library servicing the Collingwood area. Over the years, it has hosted events like the “Cities of the Mind” cantata by Martin Friedel and many other performances by the Astra Chamber Music Society.
