Planning on a trip to the great outdoors over the warmer months? Why don’t you stay a little longer? The Victorian Government has announced that camping will be free in every national park and state forest in Victoria. That’s 131 Parks Victoria campgrounds to choose from. This initiative will save happy campers a whopping $7.3 million in booking fees. Free camping is available from December 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
Free camping in Victoria
Over 50 million people visit Victoria’s state forests and national parks a year. Immerse yourself in nature and go hiking, fishing, bird watching, trail bike riding, horse riding and more. Take your time to explore the area, with free access to every campground across the state.
If you’ve already booked and paid to go camping, don’t worry! Existing bookings for the summer will be refunded.
“There is no better time than this summer to get out and enjoy nature, all while saving the cost of your holiday and boosting tourism in regional communities,” said Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos.
With 131 different possibilities, there’s so many adventures within reach. Stay by the beach and enjoy a coastal retreat at campsites like Johanna Beach just off the Great Ocean Road, or at the popular Tidal River site in Wilson’s Promontory. Visit the campground near Buchan Caves, or venture into the Otways for a stay at Lake Elizabeth. Head west to Budj Bim National Park and stay overnight, or journey east to Lake Catani Campground in Mount Buffalo National Park.
Whatever you decide, remember to plan ahead and be mindful of the surrounding environment. Head to the Parks Victoria website for more information about camping.
