Fuel has gone up, so to our relief, public transport in Victoria will be free for the month of April. That’s right. Trains, buses and trams around Melbourne will be free, as well as regional trains, coaches and buses. Public transport will be free from Tuesday, March 31 to Thursday, April 30.

Free public transport in Victoria this April
During this free period, you won’t have to touch on with your myki. All myki gates will be open. If you touch on by accident, the machine won’t charge you. Myki pass holders will not be charged during the free travel period, and will be extended in the background before paid travel begins again. If you are unsure, you can contact the call centre at 1800 800 007 to pause your pass, or ask for a refund.
“Fuel prices are rising and Victorian families are feeling it,” said Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams. “Our transport system can support this as a temporary measure, and it’s important to support Victorians right now.”
Free travel is limited to trips within Victoria, with an exception for travel to Albury, Mount Gambier and Deniliquin. Privately-run services like ferries and airport basses are excluded from this program.

Seat reservations will not be available on V/Line trains. However, you’ll still need to make a seat reservation for some coach services, in order to manage capacity. If you have already booked during this period, you can visit a staffed station or fill out the customer feedback form to seek a refund from Tuesday, March 31.
If you’re planning on a long trip over the Easter long weekend, just remember that services will run on a public holiday timetable on Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6.
