Keen for a getaway this autumn? The Macedon Ranges is definitely the place to be, lighting up for the whole month of April with a vibrant autumn festival. And with so many charming villages, it’s hard to know where to go first. If you’re travelling by public transport, we’d recommend the picturesque town of Malmsbury. Accessible by train, and less than 90 minutes away from Melbourne, this small, bluestone village is home to a stunning botanic gardens, a historic viaduct and quaint streetscapes. And it’s absolutely gorgeous in autumn.

Malmsbury
Located on the lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung peoples, Malmsbury was originally established as a service centre for eager travellers on their way to the goldfields. As you walk through town, you’ll see plenty of historic buildings, such as hotels, churches and the town hall.
While you’re in Malmsbury, you can’t miss the magnificent viaduct. This heritage-listed railway bridge, which was built between 1858 and 1861, was made from nearly 9,000m³ of solid, local bluestone. It’s 149 metres long, has five arches and is a great spot for pictures.

Between the viaduct and the village, you’ll find the picturesque Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. Established in the 1850s, this spot is one of Victoria’s earliest regional botanic gardens, and is home to an Ornamental Lake, a bluestone fountain and an Arboretum. In autumn, the gardens are resplendent, with fiery autumn leaves blanketing the paths. Pack a picnic to enjoy and soak it all in. Don’t forget to say hello to the family of resident geese, who are often seen waddling around the lake, and sleeping beneath the dreamy willow trees.
If you’d like to stay outdoors a little longer, walk on to the Malmsbury Reservoir Reserve Park, where you’ll find walking tracks and picnic facilities. Fishing is also permitted, as long as you have a licence.
Food and drink

Time your visit to align with the local farmers market, which takes place on the third Sunday of the month. Find fresh produce and handmade goods at this bustling event. Keep up with the schedule here.
If you’re feeling hungry, Malmsbury Bakery is located in a heritage building, so you can munch on a pie or a vanilla slice in a historic setting. Everything is baked fresh on-site, and there’s a lovely courtyard if you’d like some fresh air.
For something heavier, feast on Mediterranean food at The Stables, while taking in lovely views of the Botanic Gardens.
If you’re after a more quirky experience, check out Merchants of Malmsbury. Located in the old post office, you can enjoy some Devonshire tea, while admiring an assortment of toys, photographs and treasures.
Fancy a tipple? Swing by Birthday Villa, a boutique vineyard just outside of town that opens up their cellar door on weekends.
