The annual Glow Winter Arts Festival is coming back to the City of Stonnington. In this free, twilight festival, you’re invited to wander around Prahran Square and Central Park Gardens, and immerse yourself a range of illuminated outdoor installations. The festival will take over Prahran Square from June 3 to 12, before moving on to Central Park Gardens from June 16 to 19.
Glow Winter Arts Festival
Inspired by the theme “Metamorphosis”, the commissioned artworks this year are ready to ignite your curiosity. On top of the installations, there will be hot chocolate to drink, food trucks to try onsite, and local businesses in the surrounding areas, ready to offer refreshments on your way to and from the festival.
“Our outdoor spaces will come alive at night with laughter and light as the Glow Winter Arts Festival returns,” said City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Jami Klisaris. “This is a chance to step out and discover Prahran Square and Central Park in Malvern East in a new way by walking through immersive installations and exploring large scale illuminated artworks.”
So, what’s showing at the festival?
Head to Prahran Square from Friday June 3, and see it transformed into a living, breathing organism for the installation, Now Breathe. Created by Resolution X collaborators, Jamie Russel, David Bartholomeusz and Kait Hall, this installation uses high resolution lighting tubes, that become one with the Square’s Urban Forest. Walk along the pathway, through the lights, and listen to a soundscape of over 250 recordings of human breaths.
After that, head to Central Park Gardens, and see five installations from June 16 to June 19. They are:
Monolith
Marvel at this massive installation by Skunk Control. Monolith alters the pathway of light as it passes through fine structures, creating a constantly shifting landscape of colour.
Sky Castle
Wander through a dreamy, interactive sound and light installation by ENESS. Move through the inflatable arches, and listen to a melodic xylophone symphony, that responds to crowd flow and fluctuations.
Taking Flight: A Neon Hot Air Balloon Experience
In this 3D, almost life-size hot air balloon by Carla O’Brien, you’re invited to imagine what it would be like to soar through the skies.
Cautionary Note
See an intriguing sculpture by Michael Doolan, and think about the narrative between the protagonist and the bird.
The Overbloom
The fountain at Central Park will be surrounded by one thousand glittering flowers, leading to a giant, blooming flower. This creation by Mandylights celebrate the joy in growth, the fun in the journey, and the pause before the moment of excitement, through the sheer scale of this glowing installation.
Remember, this winter festival is free to attend. Find more information about each of the installations here.
