Caravan manufacturer Jayco is celebrating the best camping and caravan destinations around Australia with their inaugural Greatest Escapes awards. They asked passionate travellers and members of the public to vote on their favourite destinations, from off-grid gems to luxurious getaways. And the Great Ocean Road received a special shout-out, winning the People’s Choice award. This legendary destination was praised for its universal appeal, with plenty of outdoor adventures, breathtaking views and vibrant culture.
Greatest Escapes 2023
Jayco narrowed down five finalists across eight categories to present a spectacular showcase of Australia in the Greatest Escapes awards.
“Just in time for the Australian summer, these amazing locations will no doubt encourage adventurers to get out there and explore the great outdoors,” said Gerry Ryan, Jayco’s Founder and Chairman.

Great Ocean Road, Greatest Escapes
The Great Ocean Road is a must-do experience for any traveller in Victoria. This scenic drive is famous, not only in Australia, but around the world, for its stunning natural beauty.
The 243 km route hugs the southern coast, taking you past remarkable beaches, rugged cliffs and lush forests. See natural wonders like the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, the Bay of Islands and more. Venture into the Otways and discover waterfalls and towering trees.
Once you’ve had enough of the great outdoors, get your dose of art and culture by exploring museums, galleries, and notable destinations like Budj Bim National Park.
Victorian finalists
While the Great Ocean Road was the only Victorian winner in the Greatest Escapes awards, there were plenty of Victorian finalists for you to check out.
Phillip Island Beachfront Holiday Park received a nod for being one of the best Family Destinations in the country. This location provides direct access to the beach, and has different types of accommodation available, including cabins and caravan sites. It’s also near plenty of family-friendly attractions, including the adorable Penguin Parade.
Meanwhile, Nug Nug Camping Ground & Caravan Park was praised for being a Budget-Friendly escape. Priced at just $7.50 per night for adults, this location is nestled near Buffalo River, south of Myrtleford. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, you’ll find plenty picturesque landscapes and river views. Explore the walking trails nearby, or try fishing in the river.
For something a little more luxurious, stay at Park Lane Holiday Park in the Yarra Valley. You’ll find sites for caravanning and camping, as well as glamping pods, studios and cabins. Explore the wineries in the region, look out for wildlife, go on walking trails or take a dip in the swimming pool.
Finally, Lightning Creek Camping Ground was a finalist for Adventure Destinations. Located on the banks of Snowy Creek, this camping ground is surrounded by native forest. Roughly 22km south of Mitta Mitta, the unpowered site is free for you to stay in.
