Drive about an hour away from Melbourne to the stunning extinct volcano known as Hanging Rock. Hop out the car, stretch your legs, and experience the picturesque natural landscape of the region… with a llama as a hiking buddy. Thanks to Hanging Rock Llama Treks, you can have a totally unique experience that goes beyond picnicking at Hanging Rock. Embark on a 5 or 12km walk through the region, and experience the Australian bush like never before. If the hike is a bit intimidating, there’s also Meet & Greets available, so you can pat and feed these lovely creatures.
Hanging Rock Llama Treks
So, why llamas? Llamas are excellent hiking companions that enjoy new sights and are naturally curious. On these treks, they are often to first to spot wildlife along the trail. Amble together through the bush, and enjoy each other’s company, while taking in the sights of your tranquil surroundings.
The 5km Hanging Rock Reserve Walk takes about three hours to complete. Available by appointment only from Thursday to Sunday, this experience includes entry into Hanging Rock Reserve, as well as morning or afternoon tea. It’s suitable for visitors over the age of 12. The 5km walk costs $70 per person.
Meanwhile, the adorable Llama Meet & Greet sessions last for about an hour. Perfect for all ages, this experience is great for anyone who wants to get close with the llamas. You can give them lots of pats, take plenty of photos and feed them too. This costs $30 per person and includes morning or afternoon tea with the llamas. Children aged two and under can visit for free. This experience is also by appointment only from Thursday to Sunday, with a maximum group size of six.
Finally, if you’re feeling adventurous, tackle the 12km Domino Rail Trail. On this six hour return journey, you’ll stroll with a llama through the Wombat Forest between Lyonville and Trentham. You can bring your own lunch for a picnic at the old Trentham Station, or purchase a bite from one of Trentham’s cafes. Take lots of photos throughout the day, and feed your llama at the end of the experience. This journey costs $95 per person, and runs on very specific days.
