There’s some spectacular lookouts around Melbourne, like Burkes Lookout in the Dandenong Ranges. But if you’re after a different kind of vantage point, and you don’t mind travelling further out, consider a trip to Hang’s Tree in Strath Creek for your next view. Located just 90 minutes north of Melbourne, this spot may have an ominous name, but the views are simply breathtaking. Anchored by a single tree, you can catch the sunrise and watch the clouds unfurl over the landscape below.

Bundle up for the morning chill and drive over to this serene spot. Feel like anything is possible as you watch the sun rise over the horizon, and bathe the surrounding hills in its gentle golden glow. Or, if it’s a cloudy day, feel as though you’re on top of the world as the hills get shrouded in mist.
If you miss the sunrise, don’t worry. This viewing spot is still beautiful throughout the day. Soak in the greenery of the valley below during the day, or return at night for uninterrupted views of the cosmos.
Hang’s Tree is a quiet place, so you won’t find any facilities here. If you’re bringing anything like a cup of coffee, remember to take your rubbish with you. Parking is limited, and you’ll find this viewing spot on Horans Track, a humble dirt road.
For even more views, swing by Murchison Gap Lookout. Just a five-minute drive away, this space is also a great spot to catch the sunrise. This lookout has a viewing platform, jutting out from the side of the hill. There are seats on the platform, as well as a shaded table under the trees. From this spot, you’ll have an excellent vantage point of the ‘Valley of a Thousand Hills’.
While you’re in the area, drive 20 minutes away from Strath Creek into Mount Disappointment State Forest and check out Strath Creek Falls. Stroll through the forest, and see the waterfall tumble 50 metres over the rock face and into the gully below. The walk is a 1 km return journey, with plenty of steps and short, steep hills. It takes about 45 minutes to complete.
