A Mexican-inspired rooftop bar and restaurant has opened on Hardware Lane, and it’s completely gluten-free. Say hello to Hotel Nacional, a five-level venue that’s serving up modern Mexican fusion. Located in the former Campari house, this new establishment is from some of the same people behind Repeat Offender and Rufio. It’s open every day from 12pm, with the rooftop open until 1am.

The building has been recently renovated to transport you from Melbourne to Mexico. And with five levels, there’s so many nooks and crannies for you to explore. The ground level seats up to 60 people, level one fits up to 80, and the main rooftop has room for 100 standing guests. There’s also a 30 person rooftop mezzanine, which has an open-air bar alongside buzzing city views.
“We wanted to create a venue unlike anything else in the city,” said Taylor Granchi. “You walk up the stairs and you are transported to another location across the globe. The earthy tones, the arches, the shapes, the crazy pavers, the textured walls, the cacti — there is so much Mexican feel.”
The menu, designed by Head Chef Sergio Tourn, features Mexican fusion paired lovingly with seasonal produce and native ingredients. Indulge in an assortment of dishes, with plenty of small bites, tacos, tostadas and larger plates. Items on the menu include: Cauliflower Tofu Escabeche with wakame, peanut and salsa macha, Birria Braised Beef Taco with picked onion and consume and Slow-Cooked Barbacoa Lamb with Mexican barbeque sauce and watercress.
The entire menu is gluten-free, and there’s plenty of vegan options too.
If you’re not sure what to pick, there’s also three types of set menus, including an entirely vegan option. On the rooftop, you’ll find a dedicated menu with bar snacks and tostadas. From Monday to Friday, there’s also an express lunch available for busy workers. Start Monday’s right with half-priced margaritas, or opt for a $30 steak night on Wednesdays.
