There’s more to rum than Bundy and Bacardi.
Rum, the sugarcane spirit, is making waves this month at Melbourne’s Whitehart Bar with an entire day dedicated to all its variations, styles and flavours. (FEatured image: Magda Ehlers)
On Sunday 30 May, the CBD bar at the end of Whitehart Lane will be hosting two rum-soaked sessions where more than 25 distilleries will be on hand to showcase more than 80 rums from around the world.
There’ll be light rums perfect for cocktails, dark rums with stronger notes and hints of spice as well as premium rums made to be drunk neat or on the rocks.
Organised by The Rum Authority, there will also be rum masterclasses happening all day long as well as an expert rum panel that will answer all of your pressing questions. And when you’ve taste-tested enough to find the one (or two or three) you like most, you’ll be able to pick up a bottle at the courtyard-cum-bottle shop.
The talented crew from sustainable bar Ends & Means will be popping up and mixing up a storm and more delicious rum cocktails. And since the spirit in question is heavily associated with the Caribbean, there’ll be island food to chow down on as well as a tiki mug shop. But don’t forget to take home your own glass, which is included in the ticket price ($47.29).
While gin might have a stronghold on the city and Espresso Martinis be ever-present, it’s time to make room for rum. More info and tickets here.
