Australia’s First Indoor Drive-in Cinema Opens For Daytime Screenings This Thursday

Daylight makes no difference for this drive-in cinema.

With traditional drive-in cinemas, we’re held hostage to the elements and to the Sun. But not anymore because Village Cinemas have teamed up with the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to bring us the ”MCEC Drive In(Door) Cinema” just in time for the post-New Year’s school holiday period. No matter the weather, whether it’s rain, hail, summer thunderstorm, shine or four seasons in one day, the Drive In(Door) Cinema is indoors and safe from the gods. And since the cinema experience is being held in the massive cavernous spaces of MCEC’s exhibition bays, this Australian first is already kitted out with light-controlling features so movies can be shown at any time of day.

Imagine that—driving into the MCEC shrouded in light, finding your park in one of the 174 spaces, and when the trailers start rolling the lights dim and it’s dark.

But what about the snacks, the choc-tops and popcorn?

No movie-going experience is complete without snacks. Luckily, Village Cinemas have thought about this beforehand and they’ve got you covered. All you need to do is download the Skip app and order what you like. Choose from the traditional range of Candy Bar treats and delights or go for something more special with ice cream from Nitro 196 Below or doughnuts from The Dough Truck

These will then be hand-delivered to you at your car so you don’t miss a moment.

Family matinee sessions will see movies like Frozen, Shrek and Trolls: World Tour as well as The Lion King while adults will be treated to some old-school cool classics with screenings of Top Gun, The Breakfast Club, Blues Brothers, Pulp Fiction and Clueless as well as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Speed and Dirty Dancing.

To see the full schedule and purchase tickets, which are $49 per carload, head over here.

The Drive In(Door) Cinema runs from January 7 to 26, 2021 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
