After a sold-out season in Paris, the most extensive Titanic exhibition in the world is here in Melbourne. Feel transported back to 1912, and see over 200 artefacts recovered from the wreck site. In this experience, you’ll discover recreated ship interiors, including the Grand Staircase, First Class Parlour Suite and Verandah Café, combined with real objects rescued from the depths of the ocean. TITANIC: The Artefact Exhibition will dock at Melbourne Museum from now until Sunday April 21.
TITANIC: The Artefact Exhibition at Melbourne Museum
The doomed maiden voyage of the Titanic is one of the most famous tragedies in modern history. It’s inspired countless films, books and songs, including the legendary 1997 film by James Cameron. Now, you’re invited to collect your boarding pass, step on board, and gain an insight into the personal stories of the unfortunate passengers and crew.
“Tragedy, heroism, sacrifice, survival and loss — these are themes the Titanic evokes which continue to resonate today, with people of all ages across the globe,” said Lynley Crosswell, Museums Victoria CEO & Director.
In this exhibition, you’ll learn the stories and see the possessions of those on board. These stories include Australians like stewardess Evelyn Marsden, who defied social norms and helped row her lifeboat to safety, and engineer Arthur McRae, whose grandparents settled on the Mornington Peninsula. Artefacts include an unopened bottle of champagne with a 1900 vintage, luggage, a filigree ring with diamonds and a window frame from the Verandah Café. These items were recovered from four kilometres below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean.
Step through meticulously recreated ship interiors, including the Grand Staircase, First Class Parlour Suite and Verandah Café. Then, touch an iceberg that’s the same freezing temperature as the waters on that fateful night.
