A new 195-room hotel has just opened in Melbourne CBD, just moments away from Flagstaff Gardens. Located on the site of a former tinsmith factory, Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street is 18 storeys high, and features a restaurant, a terrace bar and a gym. Developed by Spacious Group, this $90 million location is the largest purpose-built hotel to open in the CBD this year, and is the first new-build Mercure in the city in over a decade. You’ll find it at the western edge of the CBD, at 492 La Trobe Street.

You’ll find a mixture of subtle industrial detailing, inspired by the site’s history, as well as calm and contemporary features. The guest rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing visitors to soak in plenty of natural light, while select suites open out onto private outdoor terraces. The décor of the room is inspired by nearby gardens, with plenty of spring tones like green, blush pink and soft neutrals.
If you’re feeling bougie, there’s six suites to choose from. The premier offering is Suite 1603, which has a two-person bathtub that’s positioned against a window, looking out over the city. Located on the 16th floor, this spot would make a prime location to see the fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Guests can also keep up with their fitness routine with a visit to the gym, which is open 24/7.
Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street is a six minute walk away from Southern Cross Station, eight minutes away from Marvel Stadium and 12 minutes away from Queen Victoria Market.
“We’re in a unique pocket of the city and are fortunate to have great separation between ourselves and other tall buildings on all sides,” said Justin Phillips, General Manager. “So no matter where you stay in the hotel, you’ve got great views, whether it’s towards Docklands, back towards Flagstaff Gardens, or views of the CBD and out towards North Melbourne.”
Foundry
Take the lift up to the sixth floor, and step out into the hotel restaurant and bar, Foundry. Open to the public, the bar seats 30 people inside, and continues out to a 60-person outdoor terrace. Meanwhile, the restaurant fits 130 people.

Sip on a drink, and take in the view of Flagstaff Gardens and the city skyline from the terrace.
“We get the first and last light on the terrace, and you can see all the way down to Marvel Stadium and the Bolte Bridge,” said venue manager Summer Norton. “At golden hour, it completely transforms the space.”
90 percent of the wine is sourced from Victorian producers, so you’ll find familiar names like Giant Steps and Scotchmans Hill. You’ll also see local beers available on tap or in a bottle, as well as a range of non-alcoholic and low-alcoholic options, such as a Soda Pop, a house-made pineapple dirty soda with agave nectar. As for cocktails, look forward to creative drinks, like Night Owl, a twist on the espresso martini with wattleseed-infused Bulleit Bourbon, Mr Black Coffee and caramel miso.
At the bar, you’ll also find a light menu that’s perfect for sharing, like triple cheese croquette, prawn ceviche, rare beef tataki and house dips.

Otherwise, treat yourself to a meal at the restaurant for something more substantial. Look forward to regional produce from the open kitchen, like Cape Grim Angus on the grill, Humpty Doo barramundi and fettuccine ragu.
Foundry is open daily, with the bar open from 5pm and the restaurant open for dinner from 5:30pm.
