After Broadway, it’s now Australia’s turn.
Twenty years after its film premiere, Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film Moulin Rouge! returns to Australia in the form of a hit musical, which just last year was honoured with 14 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. (Featured image: @antony)
Slated to open in August 2021, the Belle Époque Parisian tale of the handsome young composer Christian and his romance with the glamourous Satine, the actress and star of the legendary Moulin Rouge cabaret, will come to life on stage.
Christian and Satine’s tale has been expanded upon from the original movie production, which was largely shot in Sydney’s Fox Studios, to include even more hit songs. The film celebrated scores from across the past five decades, but thanks to John Logan (book writer) and musical arranger/orchestrator Justin Levine, the musical score now features over 70 songs from more than 160 songwriters spanning over 160 years of music.
Global Creatures Productions, who developed the Moulin Rouge! The Musical over a ten-year period, are bringing the stage spectacular to Australia with the show’s first performances planned for Melbourne’s newly renovated Regent Theatre, which now has much-improved seating.
Tickets to Moulin Rouge! The Musical! are now on sale.
