Cinderella is a classic story that we all know and love. But, that doesn’t mean you should ignore the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. This romantic production by Opera Australia and Crossroads Live has finally made its Australian premiere in Melbourne, and it is packed full of moments that will take your breath away. This gorgeous show, filled with fun twists and turns, is now playing at the Regent Theatre.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
Rodgers and Hammerstein, the duo behind The Sound of Music, first wrote Cinderella for television in 1957. The show starred Julie Andrews, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance. Over 100 million viewers watched the original broadcast, which made up about 60 per cent of the entire U.S. population. After further television remakes over the years, the stage version finally made it to Broadway in 2013.
And now, you can see it for yourself. This lavish stage adaptation will take you straight to your childhood. From the moment the show starts, you’ll be immersed in a storybook world, filled with delightful characters, gorgeous costumes, and even adorable animals in the trees.
See all the moments that you know and love, including the pumpkin ride, the beautiful ball, and of course, the iconic glass slippers. But, there’s some fabulous tweaks to this classic tale. Both Cinderella and the Prince have more moments to connect with each other, the step-family has distinct and intriguing personalities, and there’s interesting new paths for the characters to take.
There’s some utterly show stopping moments, from the Fairy Godmother soaring through the air to the incredible costume transformations. When the glass slippers appeared for the first time, a little girl in the audience very audibly gasped with amazement.
On top of the lush visuals, the music is sensational. Listen to some beloved tunes, including In My Own Little Corner, Impossible/It’s Possible and Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful? The live orchestra will sweep you gracefully into every dance sequence, and the strong cast knock it out of the park with their vocals.
Shubshri Kandiah (Aladdin, Fangirls) leads the cast as Cinderella, with Ainsley Melham (Merrily We Roll Along, Aladdin) as Prince Topher and Silvie Paladino (Mamma Mia!, Les Misérables) as Marie, the Fairy Godmother.
Follow your dreams, and see Cinderella at the Regent Theatre.
