From forest walks to coastal hikes, the great outdoors offers lots of possibilities for summer strolls. And if you’re looking for an alpine trail that’s packed with swimming holes and canyons, look no further than Mount Beauty Gorge Walk. Nestled in the High Country, about 30 minutes away from Bright, this intermediate stroll offers a blissful escape into nature, with forests, a suspension bridge and plenty of swimming possibilities in the warmer months. This gorge-ous trail is about a 4km return journey, and takes roughly 90 minutes to complete. But, if you’re going for a swim, you’ll probably stay out there a little longer!
Mount Beauty Gorge Walk
Your journey begins at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park in Mount Beauty. Walk uphill along the Aqueduct Track, continue along a signposted track for 1km, then cross a swing bridge over the West Kiewa River. Continue to walk uphill, and eventually, you’ll come across a swimming hole. If you’d like to keep going, there’s another opportunity for swimming about 100 metres upriver. Once you reach the gorge, you’ll see high rock walls surrounding the river, making you feel like you’re in your own private escape.

With lots of river crossings, this hike is a great way to cool off on a warm day. In summer, when the rocks are dry in the riverbed, it’s possible to actually swim or wade upstream to a canyon. This 400m river swim offers pristine waters and a refreshing escape from the summer heat. If you’re planning on a swim, plan ahead and bring your bathers and a towel.

Just note, the water levels and flow can change at any time, as it is a part of the Snowy Mountain power system. For your own safety, if you’re not a strong swimmer, if the rocks are wet and slippery, or if the flow of the water is too powerful, don’t wade into the river.
When you’re not in the water, listen out for the sounds of native birds, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and admire the lush forest around you. Learn more about the walk here and here.
