There’s lots of reasons to explore the Great Ocean Road, such as seeing famous sights like the Twelve Apostles, spending time in the coastal towns, going on lovely walks and exploring the pretty beaches. And if you’re making a weekend out of it, you might be searching for some cool things to do at night. If you don’t feel like chasing glow worms in Melba Gully, why don’t you try staying on the water, and going kayaking at night instead? The team behind the Go Ride A Wave surf school have created an awesome night kayaking experience in Anglesea. Drift peacefully along a river at twilight, look out for local wildlife, and gaze up at the swirling stars. Bookings are now available for this unique experience.

Night Kayaking on the Great Ocean Road
Rug up for your evening adventure, and meet up for a briefing on the riverbank at sunset. Then, get out on the water, and watch the landscape transform from the pretty colours of dusk to the darkness of night. But don’t worry, you won’t be paddling blind. You will be wearing a headlight, and the kayak also comes with lights. As you go, look out for kangaroos, possums and birds.
As you wind your way along the river, you’ll eventually come to a quiet spot, where the group will stop for a nice hot drink or a cosy soup.

When you’re done, continue your journey. Your guide will point out some special parts of the sky, so take a moment to admire the glimmering constellations. Switch of the lights, and simply float beneath the twinkling stars. Paddle back under the glow of moonlight.
You don’t need any kayaking experience for this nocturnal adventure. Just remember to bring sensible items for the weather, like a beanie or rain jacket, as well as bathers and a towel. This guided trip takes about 90 minutes to complete, and is suitable for visitors aged 14 and up.
If you’ve worked up an appetite, grab something to eat in Anglesea, or make a quick drive to Torquay or Lorne for more late-night options.
