Melbourne’s favourite sunflower destination is reopening to the public this weekend. At just about an hour away from the city, these sunflower fields are perfect for a bright and wholesome day trip. Drive out to Dunnstown, not too far from Ballarat, and wander along the golden fields. Soak in the sunlight and take home your own sunflowers at the end of the day. The flowers have finally started to bloom, so Pick Your Own Sunflowers is reopening on Saturday February 19. The season will then last for another four to six weeks, depending on the flowers.
Pick Your Own Sunflowers
Swap city views for golden blooms at this iconic sunflower farm. Last year, there were almost 200, 000 sunflowers ready to be picked. Who knows how many will bloom this summer? No matter what, you’ll be sure to get the perfect Instagram shot at this Dunnstown farm.
The farm is opening to a limited amount of visitors this weekend, to ensure that everything will run smoothly. After that, they will be open as usual to the public. They aim to stay open until at least Sunday March 20.
The sunflower stems are quite tough, so you’re welcome to bring your own secateurs or scissors to protect your hands. Of course, if you’re not a gardener and you don’t own any secateurs, they will sell those items at the farm gate for your convenience. You’re also encouraged to bring your own bucket, so that the sunflowers can travel home safely.
Furry friends are welcome to join you in the paddock as long as they are on a leash. However, keep a look out for any snakes on the ground or bees in the air. Do keep an eye on the weather forecast before you go.
Once you bring your flowers home, you’ll have a delightful souvenir of your fun in the sun.
When: Saturday February 19 to Sunday March 20. Keep an eye on their social media for any updates about the season.
Cost of entry: $5 per person. Children under 5 are free.
Sunflowers are $2 a stem.
There are no toilets, so pee before you go!
Booking in advance is recommended. Check out their website for more information.
