Travelling to the Great Ocean Road this summer? After exploring coastal towns and taking beachside strolls, switch things up and meander along an enchanting inland trail, which will take you through native forest, farmland, coastal gullies and wetlands. This multi-purpose path, which is 19.3 kilometres long, connects the towns of Timboon and Port Campbell. The Poorpa Yanyeen Meerreeng trail opened to the public in late 2023, but was only officially named last month. It means to “travel through Country” in Kirrae Whurrong language, and as you make your way between the two towns, you’ll hopefully feel a sense of place and connection. You can go in either direction, but it will be easier to start from Timboon, as you will be going downhill to Port Campbell.

Poorpa Yanyeen Meerreeng trail
Journey through stunning forest landscapes, across rolling farmland, over bridges and more on this scenic trail. As you go, the scene will transform to reveal coast gully thickets, peaceful wetlands and ocean views. The path is 2.5 metres wide, and is great for walking and bike riding. It’s mostly unsealed, but does have sections of gravel, reinforced boardwalks and sealed concrete.
On a bike, the entire journey should take 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete. An e-bike will take about 1.5 to 2 hours, just remember to fully charge before you go, as there are no recharge points. Finally, a walk will take around 3.5 to 6 hours. Dogs are welcome to join you on your walk, just keep them on a lead, pick up after them and don’t disturb any farm animals.
Timboon to Paaratte Recreation Reserve

Distance: 8km
Leave town via Power Creek Reserve and make your way along boardwalks and over bridges. Look out for cows grazing away in the fields, and feel cool in the shade of the tall forest.
About halfway through this section, you’ll pass Schulz Organic Creamery & Cafe. Grab something light for a quick energy hit, or take it slow and unwind over a leisurely coffee and sweet treat.
When you arrive at Paaratte Recreation Reserve, you’ll find picnic facilities, toilets and water.
Paaratte Recreation Reserve to Port Campbell Lookout
Distance: 10km
Continue your journey through farmland on the edge of the forest. As you make your way, the scenery will slowly shift to reveal ocean views. Smell the sea breeze along the clifftop heath, and if the season is right for it, see blooming Port Campbell Guinea Flowers. Stop at the scenic lookout and admire the town, the bay and the ocean beyond.
Port Campbell Lookout to Port Campbell

Distance: 1.3km
Complete your journey to town through a wetland boardwalk. If you’re on foot, make your way down from the lookout via stairs and stroll across a suspension bridge. Cyclists can continue on a footpath for the final stretch. Once you’re in Port Campbell, reward yourself with a meal at one of the cafes or restaurants.
If you enjoyed the Poorpa Yanyeen Meerreeng trail, you’ll be happy to know that it also connects to the Camperdown to Timboon Rail Trail. This connection means that there’s almost 60 kilometres of trails to explore between Camperdown and Port Campbell, so you can come back another time for more outdoor adventures.
