After taking over Melbourne in 2004, and Sydney in 2015, the Red Bull Billy Cart Race is returning to Melbourne. Over 50 teams from around Australia will race over to Melbourne for the ‘Grand Prix’ of billy cart events. Teams have been chosen for the ingenuity, creativity and capability of the vehicle, with the race course set to include obstacles, beams and even some jumps. See the teams rush their handmade carts down Lansdowne Street, and have some fun yourself, when the race takes place on Saturday December 3.
Red Bull Billy Cart Race
The Red Bully Billy Cart Race is all about wacky rides and fun for everyone. Since launching in Brussels, Belgium in 2000, this non-motor racing event has taken place in 93 cities around the world.
The Melbourne event starts at 10:30am, and is free for spectators to enjoy. The first race starts at 11am, and you can watch it trackside on Lansdown Street, or live on 7plus with hosts Danny Clayton, Swag on the Beat, Libby Birch and Stephanie ‘Hex’ Bendixsen.
On the day, you’ll enjoy plenty of food trucks and beverage offerings, including licensed areas. There will also be free interactive games and entertainment from Archie Brothers, Holey Moley, Strike Bowling and the highly-anticipated Hijinx Hotel.
Electronic music duo Peking Duk will open the race in a disco duck-inspired cart, in celebration of their new single, ‘Spend It’ ft. Circa Waves.
“We’re so stoked to be involved in the Red Bull Billy Cart Race this year,” they said. “This type of event and racing is right up our alley and we’re pretty keen for everyone to see our hilarious duck-inspired cart.”
Fellow musician Rob Mills will also compete on the day with a replica of the Suzuki Jimny. The winning team for 2022 will drive home a real Suzuki Jimny as the prize.
The race will be judged based on creativity, showmanship, speed and sustainability.
The day will end at 3:30pm with a special performance by Haiku Hands.
