You can’t go wrong with street food, and this Thai café in Melbourne Central is serving up the goods with flair and frivolity. Son In Law, which used to reside in Collingwood, moved to the ground floor of the Ella precinct earlier last year. And they’ve got the sweetest selection of treats you’ve ever seen, with adorable cartoon baos, burgers and even pizza. They’re open every day, from 12pm to 7pm.
Son In Law
Named for the famous street food dish, in which a mother threatens her son-in-law’s family jewels by serving him deep-fried eggs, this casual café offers creative treats that will make you smile.
The iconic cartoon baos at Son In Law feature a variety of familiar characters, like Pikachu, Doraemon, My Melody, Rilakkuma and more. Treat yourself to something sweet, and enjoy the baos with flavours like Nutella, Thai milk tea or coconut Kaya.
Otherwise, indulge in a savoury bao, with filling options like braised pork belly, roasted duck, grilled chicken, soft shell crab or battered prawn. There’s also vegan options, with tofu, vegan satay chicken or vegan duck. These savoury flavours are available in either the adorable characters, or in a simple white bun.
Other cute offerings include fairy floss, salted egg custard bun, pork sausage bun, pizza with BBQ chicken, and cartoon burgers with spicy mayo, fried chicken and waffle.
If you’re not interested in the adorable treats, there’s also a range of mains and sides, including fried chicken ribs, soft shell crab with dry green curry and braised pork belly with rice. Then, quench your thirst with Thai milk tea, coconut water or soft drink.
