Every year, Tourism Australia’s Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer AM, reveals the top 10 best beaches across Australia’s mainland and surrounding islands. And this year, for the first time ever, a Victorian beach has claimed the top spot. Travel three hours away from Melbourne and discover the delightful Squeaky Beach in Wilsons Promontory. This charming coastal haven has white sand that squeak under your feet with every step, as well as crystal-clear water. And now, Squeaky Beach is officially the Best Australian Beach for 2024.
Squeaky Beach – Best Australian Beach
You’ll find Squeaky Beach on the western side of Wilsons Promontory National Park. Bookended by granite boulders, this pristine beach has beautiful, turquoise water and bright, white sand. The sand consists of fine, rounded grains of quartz, which compress under your feet and create the famous squeaking sound. This beach is not patrolled by lifesavers, so if you choose to swim, do be careful. If you don’t feel like going in the water, there are walking trails around, which lead to magnificent coastal views.
The Best Australian Beaches list was created by Brad Farmer AM, who is one of Tourism Australia’s Friends of Australia. In 1985, he set out to document every beach in Australia. Every year, he carefully curates the best beaches to go to from almost 12,000 contenders.
“The list of ‘best beaches’ attracts headlines both here in Australia and in key international tourism markets around the world,” said Farmer. “That’s why I take the chance to uncover some of those destinations that might not be well-known but are home to some of Australia’s, and in my opinion, the world’s, best beaches.”
