Pack your trunk and embark on a journey back in time by staying inside a historic 1920s steam carriage on Airbnb. Lovingly restored by hosts Mike and Fleur, the carriage comes with a master bedroom, two other bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. Lose yourself in this nostalgic space, and wake up to the sounds of singing birds underneath lush trees. This steam carriage was recently recognised by Airbnb as the most unique stay in Australia. You can find it roughly two hours away from Melbourne, nestled within Forrest, Victoria.
Steam: Renovated 1920s Carriage on Airbnb
The carriage was built at the Newport Railway Workshop in 1926, and alternated between operating as a first and second class carriage. It was retired in 1983, then sold and transported to Forrest. Mike and Fleur spent nine months restoring the carriage in 2014, and they conducted a second renovation in 2020 to add a more elegant, 1920s feel to the space.
“Steam is a romantic homage to the simpler and slower time,” said host Fleur Leslie. “We have found guests of all ages have an affection for train travel. We haven’t managed to pinpoint exactly why. Perhaps it’s the sense of nostalgia, the thrill of adventure, or the dependable tracks that once connected people to new worlds. If only for a few days, guests can imagine the enchantment of a 1920s train journey, a different era, a different life — then we’ve created a unique experience and some unforgettable memories.”
A nostalgic holiday
Climb aboard the carriage, and find plenty of luxurious touches throughout the space, including chandeliers, red velvet curtains and a leather lounge. Relax in the living room with books and board games, and warm up by the woodfire during the chilly evenings. The kitchen is fully functional, complete with a stove and oven, and the main bathroom has a shower and luxury amenities.
The master bedroom is set inside a double compartment carriage, with a queen bed, mahogany armchairs and a private outdoor bath.
There are also two other bedrooms, set within smaller compartments. In total, the carriage can fit six guests, but as the space is quite cosy, it’s most suitable for a couple or a family of four.
The magic continues outdoors, with a hammock, a barbeque, an undercover outside area and a verandah at the back.
Well-behaved pets are welcome to come along on your steam train adventure, just let the hosts know.
As the steam carriage is set in the town of Forrest, you’ll find plenty of nature-based activities to enjoy during your stay. Walk through the rainforest, discover waterfalls and discover the lush greenery of the Otways.
