Summer is all about golden sunsets, lazy picnics and blockbuster films. Put them all together, and you’ve got a nice time at Sunset Cinema. This outdoor cinema is returning to Melbourne across two venues over the hotter months, so you can watch your favourite films in beautiful settings. Find it first on the Heritage Lawn at Abbotsford Convent from December 4 to January 4. After that, it will take over St Kilda Botanical Gardens from January 8 to March 21.
Sunset Cinema
Gather your friends and family for a fun night out at the movies. There’s plenty of Christmas movies to kick off the holiday season, as well as a mixture of new releases and familiar favourites. Watch movies like Wicked: For Good, Zootopia 2, Dirty Dancing and Clueless. You will be given a set of headphones to use during the screening.
Gates are open from 7pm, so you can arrive early and soak in the atmosphere. Pack your own picnic to enjoy in the garden, or wander over to the snack bar for popcorn, ice cream and sweets. This is also a licenced venue, so you can sip on a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, like beer, wine, cider and soft drink. Just note that BYO alcohol is not allowed.
You’re welcome to bring your own picnic rugs, mats, seats and pillows from home. However, if you bring a taller chair, you will be asked to sit at the back so that other guests can see the screen. Beanbags are available for pre-hire, and there’s also cute beach chairs available on-site.
Upgrade your ticket to the Fever Tree Lounge, and enjoy the benefits of prime viewing from a comfy bean lounger, as well as bottomless popcorn and either a Spirit & Fever Tree mixer or Fever Tree soda on ice.
Dogs are welcome to come along, as long as they’re on a leash and you pick up after them.
As this is an outdoor event, try to be prepared by wearing layers, bringing a blanket, using insect repellent and even bringing a poncho. Sessions will only be cancelled if the rain is heavy and dangerous.
