You’ve tried virtual reality. You’ve tried going to the theatre. But, have you experienced them both at the same time? Enter The Door In Question, Australia’s first-ever virtual reality immersive theatre experience. Coming back to Melbourne after an excellent run in 2021, this new iteration will take you across multiple sites in Footscray. This surreal show will give you the experience of psychosis through VR, interactive AI and other forms of cross reality (XR) technologies. The Door in Question will play in Melbourne as part of Sleepless Footscray Festival from May 8 to 17.
The Door In Question
This immersive theatre experience aims to destigmatise the subject of living with mental illness. It was developed with clinical psychologists, and was based on real-life experiences from producer Troy Rainbow.
“My mother had a diagnosis of schizophrenia, so the show aims to demonstrate how love can be expressed in a very fragmented state,” said Rainbow. “The narratives are a combination of childhood experience and written notes, including remarkable birthday presents and cards I received from my mother. The VR content is an illustration of a childhood story she wrote for me. I hope audiences can come away from the work with a greater understanding of the impact of living within an unreliable world.”
Your journey will begin in a disused shopping centre, and lead you around different parts of Footscray. Audiences will experience different visions of the same narrative, and entry times will be staggered, so you’ll have to experience this all on your own.
