The West Gate Tunnel is set to open in December, and if you’re curious to see what all those years of construction and traffic disruption were for, you can see it up close for one day only. Register for either an eight kilometre run or a 2.5 kilometre walk through the new tunnels and connecting roads. The West Gate Tunnel Discovery Day will take place on Sunday November 16. Locals living in the inner west currently have early bird access. Meanwhile, registrations to the general public will open on Friday October 24.
West Gate Tunnel Discovery Day
Explore sections of the tunnel on a leisurely walk, or run through parts of the tunnel and connecting roads. Spots are limited, and over 50,000 people are expected to attend. Registrations are essential. While the walk is free, there is a $58 registration fee for the run. Funds will go towards Community Bike Hub, which provides bike access and education across Melbourne’s west, and West Welcome Wagon, which supports asylum seekers and refugees.
“The West Gate Tunnel is getting ready to open – and this is your chance to be the first to explore these new connections across Melbourne’s west,” said Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams.
The run will start nice and early, from 7am to 8am, and walking slots are available between 10am and 5pm.
On the day, there will also be a family-friendly celebration at Yarraville Gardens. Look forward to free entertainment around the gardens, as well as food vendors, a kids zone and a West Gate Tunnel driver simulator.
There will be free shuttle buses running regularly between Footscray train station at Yarraville Gardens on the day.
