Melbourne’s first CBD bypass in 25 years opened to the public earlier this morning. Known as the Wurundjeri Way extension, this toll-free road provides a new direct link to Docklands and Marvel Stadium. It connects Dynon Road in West Melbourne to Wurundjeri Way in Docklands via a new bridge over Dudley Street, allowing more drivers to travel from one side of the city to the other, without needing to go via Spencer Street or King Street. This extension also offers a more reliable connection between Dynon Road and Flinders Street.
Wurundjeri Way extension
Concertgoers and footy fans now have a new way to visit Marvel Stadium, easing congestion and providing another entry and exit point to Docklands. Travellers from the inner west also have a more direct way to drive to Flinders Street and South Wharf.
On top of the new bridge and a 1.5km, four lane connection to Dynon Road, Wurundjeri Way has also been widened to three lanes in each direction.
The city bypass will take up to 5,000 vehicles a day off busy city roads like Spencer Street. It will also ease traffic for the 17,500 people that live in Docklands, and the 73,000 people that work there.
“Linking Wurundjeri Way to Dynon Road and CityLink will reduce CBD congestion and give Melbourne more ways to move in and out of Docklands,” said Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.
The extension will also provide a seamless connection to the West Gate Tunnel, which is set to open later this year.
