We’ve got heaps of lovely markets to check out around Melbourne, from central spots like Docklands, to further out in suburbs like Emerald. And there’s one trusty market that has been running for 50 years. Visit the beloved Camberwell Sunday Market, which first began in 1976, and has since grown into one of Victoria’s most successful volunteer-run community events. Located in the car park of Camberwell Junction Shopping Precinct, you’ll find all sorts of treasures, from vintage fashion to handmade crafts. Created and run by Balwyn Rotary, entry is via a gold coin donation, which is used for charity. The market is on every Sunday from 7am to 12:30pm, and they will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on Sunday, August 30.

Camberwell Sunday Market
Each week, there’s up to 370 stalls at the market, showcasing a vast variety of goods. Between 5000 and 7000 people visit the market every Sunday, searching for vintage memorabilia, pre-loved clothing, books, music, hardware and bric-a-brac.
Spend a leisurely morning exploring the stalls and pouring over the trestle tables. Then, linger around Camberwell Junction and grab a cup of coffee, or unwind over a relaxing brunch at one of the nearby cafes and restaurants.
If you’re keen for more market shopping, pop into the nearby Camberwell Fresh Food Market, where you’ll find fresh fruit, veggies, seafood, meat and gourmet treats.
Time your visit to align with the 50th anniversary celebrations on Sunday, August 30. On the day, you can expect live entertainment, kids’ activities, special guests and a celebration of the market’s legacy.
Supporting the community

Over the last 50 years, this market has raised over $20 million in community benefits, supporting local causes, as well as charities in Australia and overseas.
In Boroondara, nearly $8 million has been distributed towards community grants that benefit over 1,800 local organisations, such as volunteer groups, neighbourhood initiatives and arts and cultural programs.
“Proceeds from Rotary Balwyn’s Camberwell Market funded half the Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network (RIMERN) truck that collects donated furniture, appliances and homewares for people in need all over Melbourne,” said Susie Cole, Chair of RIMERN. “Market patrons really help us keep goods out of landfill and into the homes of hundreds of people needing a fresh start every year.”
Almost $6 million has gone to support food relief programs, emergency assistance, environmental initiatives and disaster recovery across Australia. Meanwhile, over $2.2 million has contributed to medical research and healthcare. Beyond Australia, over $4.7 million has gone towards humanitarian projects in Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Nepal and Turkiye.
So, when you visit the market and you give out a gold coin donation, you can be confident that you’re supporting a worthy cause.
