Located on the banks of the Campaspe River, just outside of Kyneton, lies a grand, four-storey bluestone building. Built around 1856, this towering structure was once a flour mill. It opened to the public for the first time late last year, and is now home to a gin distillery. Earlier this month, it also opened a brand new gallery, showcasing landscapes from local artist, Daniel Butterworth. You’ll find Campaspe Mill Distillery just over an hour away from Melbourne, making it a great spot for day trips. It’s open from Thursday to Monday, from 12pm to 5pm. Entry is free.

Take a drive to this grand estate in the Macedon Ranges, and marvel at the 170-year-old heritage building. Today, you’ll find a gin distillery, a new art gallery, a bistro, sprawling gardens and a museum. Walk around the grounds, where you can admire the building from afar, and look out for sculptures as you go.
Then, pop inside the distillery and check out their small-batch spirits. There’s gin of course, with drinks like Ruby Gin, made with ruby grapefruit from Harcourt. You’ll also find handcrafted vodka. Take part in a tasting, then find a bottle or two to take home. If you need some water, you can try still or sparkling spring water on-site.
Head upstairs to the bistro, and pair your drink with something from the seasonal menu. You’ll also find charcuterie and a cheese board for a leisurely day of grazing.
Check out the gallery on level 3, and see their inaugural exhibition. Admire the landscapes of the Archibald Prize finalist, Daniel Butterworth. These paintings have taken over the entire level, and are also available for purchase. He’s also the artist-in-residence, so if you see him, say hi!

While you’re in the area, go for a walk along the Campaspe River. Stay outdoors and admire the Kyneton Botanic Gardens, or check out the Kyneton Mineral Springs Reserve. Drive about 15 minutes away to check out Turpins Falls. If you’re too cold, stay in the village and pop inside one of the boutiques and galleries. Make a weekend of it, and spend some time at one of the cosy country pubs, wine bars and eateries.
