Every year, Tourism Australia’s Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer AM, reveals the top 10 best beaches across Australia’s mainland and surrounding islands. Last year, Squeaky Beach in Wilsons Prom made history as the first Victorian beach to claim the top spot. And now, the results are in for 2025, and only one Victorian beach has made it to the list. Saunter over to Cowes Beach on Phillip Island, and soak in all the coastal holiday vibes from this popular space. Cowes Beach was listed at number 10 on the Best Australian Beaches list.
Cowes Beach on Phillip Island was named as one of the Best Australian Beaches
This lovely beach was celebrated for its safe waters and holiday atmosphere. Cowes Beach is one of the few beaches in Victoria that faces the north, leading to gentle waters and low swells. Perfect for families, this sheltered beach offers plenty of shallow rocks and tidal flats to explore during low tide, and great swimming conditions at high tide. When you’re not in the water, hang out on the golden sand for beach games, or enjoy a picnic on the grassy lawn. Take a stroll along the pier, and hop on a ferry from the jetty. Around the main beach, you’ll also find plenty of buzzing restaurants, cafes and shops, perfect if you’re in need of a refreshing drink or ice cream. There’s also great facilities like BBQ areas, toilets and cold water outdoor showers. If you’re travelling to Phillip Island, Cowes acts as a great base for you to stay in.

“Every beach which makes the list is a winner and this year really highlights the incredible diversity of the beach offerings we have here in Australia,” said Farmer. “Having to pick from almost 12,000 candidates is not an easy job and at times the selections create plenty of debate, which I welcome, and I look forward to the feedback on this year’s top 10,” he added.
