From the spectacular Trentham Falls in Central Victoria to the magnificent MacKenzie Falls in the Grampians, there’s so many wonderful waterfalls to chase. And one waterfall in particular has been recently upgraded. Just 15 minutes away from Lorne, and over two hours away from Melbourne, you’ll find the beautiful Erskine Falls. This 30-metre-long waterfall, nestled within the Otways, is one of the most popular waterfalls in the area, receiving half a million visitors a year. Winter and spring are particularly good times to visit, due to the level of rain. And your trip to Erskine Falls is about to get even better, thanks to upgrades as part of Victoria’s Great Outdoors Program. The Erskine Falls upgrade was funded $720,400, paving the way for a more enjoyable and safe experience.
Erskine Falls
Take in magical views from both the top and the base of the falls. The first lookout at the top of the waterfall is just an easy 300 metre walk from the carpark. Gaze at the water and the lush fern gully below.
Otherwise, make your way down over 200 steps to the upgraded viewing platform. The journey is more strenuous, particularly on the journey back up, but it will be worth the effort. Watch the falls up close as it cascades into the rockpool below. The upgraded platform has plenty of space, so you can take as many photos as you please.
If you’d like to really stretch your legs, take a stroll along the Lemonade Creek track. Starting at Blanket Leaf Picnic Ground, this walk will take you through the forest and along the creek to Erskine Falls. Two deteriorating footbridges along the track have been rebuilt as part of the upgrades. The walk is 4.4km one way.
For something even longer, try the Erskine River Walk. This journey is 7.5km one way, and will take you from the Erskine Falls carpark all the way to the Kia Ora Caravan Park in Lorne. Along the way, you’ll cross rivers, hop over rocks, and see Erskine Falls, Straw Falls and Splitter Falls. This is a more challenging walking track.
Please plan your journey ahead, as there are no toilets at Erskine Falls. You’ll find the nearest toilet at Blanket Leaf Picnic Ground. For more information, check out the Parks Victoria website.
