Are you in need of a day trip? Swap city views for a stroll through nature. Hop in the car and drive one hour north-west of Melbourne, and take in the sights of the breath-taking Trentham Falls. Nestled in the Coliban River Scenic Reserve, this stunning natural wonder is the longest single drop waterfall in Central Victoria. Watch the falls plunge over 32 metres down an ancient basalt cliff. The waterfall is particular impressive during winter and spring, with the wetter months providing a stronger flow.
Trentham Falls
Trentham Falls is quite close to other charming towns in Victoria. It’s only 5 minutes north of Trentham, and an easy 20 minute drive away from Daylesford.
This spectacular waterfall is surrounded by lush bushland in a 24 hectare reserve. The area has over 80 species of indigenous plants, like manna gum, narrow-leaved peppermint and gorgeous wildflowers in the spring. There’s also plenty of towering eucalypts in the area.
When you arrive in the area, it’s likely that you’ll hear the waterfall from the carpark. Take the short walk from the carpark to the lookout point, and choose either the gravel sloped path or the stairs. When you reach the viewing area, relax and watch the water plunge into the ravine below. Due to the steepness of the cliffs, and the instability of the area, there is no access to either the top or the base of the falls. Dogs are welcome to come along, as long as they’re on a lead.
If you’d like to stick around, there is a picnic area in the car park, so you can stick around for a lovely meal among nature. There are picnic tables and fire pits available. If you’d like to use the fire pit, you will need to bring your own wood.
After checking out the waterfall, explore this corner of Victoria further by wandering through the nearby towns and relaxing in the spas.
Please note, the toilets are currently closed due to storm damage. The nearest public toilets are 3km away in Trentham. Keep an eye on the Parks Victoria website for any updates or changes to the area.
