We all fancy ourselves a bit of an expert when it comes to watching quiz shows on TV. And, however much we might yell at the TV, sigh in frustration, or pat ourselves on the back for getting something right, it always falls on deaf ears. But, not at Hard Quiz Live. Comedian Tom Gleeson has brought his beloved ABC quiz show to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, which means you can now call out the right answer to your heart’s content. Or, even better, participate on stage yourself. Hard Quiz Live is currently playing at Melbourne Town Hall, and will then travel around the country.
Hard Quiz Live – Hosted by Tom Gleeson
At Hard Quiz Live, there are no rules. Free from the limitations of broadcast television, Gleeson starts his act with an irreverent stand-up, poking jokes at other TV shows, the ABC, Ita Buttrose and more.
After that, comes the moment of truth. The time for Gleeson to pick his four contestants. The expert topics for each candidate are pre-selected, and if you want to be chosen, it’s best not to seem too eager. After all, you can’t be an expert on every possible subject.
Once on stage, the quiz can finally begin. Being on stage is a brave choice, as Gleeson will manage to find some way to rip into you. Whether you’re just giving the quiz a go, or you’re a jokester yourself, he will find a way to poke a bit of fun at your expense.
If you’re in the audience, this is all extremely hilarious. Watching the quiz unfold live is even better than on TV. There were many moments when someone in the crowd would shout out the answer, or let out a frustrated “Oh come on!”, with murmurs of agreement. Gleeson would banter freely with the answers, and keep the momentum going through each stage.
And if you haven’t seen Hard Quiz on TV, each stage of the game is explained briefly, so everyone can understand and enjoy the show.
Tom Gleeson is giving one final performance of Hard Quiz Live on Saturday April 9 at Melbourne Town Hall. From there, he will take the show around the country, with his next show slated for Sydney this June.
