With Lightscape, Winter Night Market, NGV Friday Nights, late-night cafes and more, there’s lots of things to do in Melbourne at night right now. And we’re not just a busy place to be when the sun sets, we’re also a pretty place too! According to Travelbag, a website for travellers from the UK, Melbourne is one of the prettiest cities around the world at night, joining other notable nocturnal destinations like New York and Tokyo. Melbourne just squeezed into the rankings at number 10, trailing behind our friends in Sydney, who came in 7th place.
Melbourne ranked among the top 10 prettiest cities to see at night
The Travelbag team looked at a number of factors to determine the rankings. They created their guide based on Instagram hashtag volume, levels of light pollution, the perceived safety of the city after dark, as well as the number of late-night venues. These factors combined to create an enjoyable experience for evening adventures. As they are based in the UK, they also prioritised cities that were further away, leading to a notable absence of other prolific destinations like Paris.
When they made the rankings, Melbourne had an Instagram hashtag volume of 14,400. Our noise and light pollution score was 40.06, and our safety score at night was 43.10 out of 100. Both of these scores were sourced from Numbeo. Melbourne had 291 venues, like bars and restaurants, open late at night, according to OpenStreetMap API.
Meanwhile, Sydney had a hashtag volume of 13,000, a noise and light pollution score of 40.19 and a safety score of 53.80. It had 325 venues open late at night.
