When you’re craving a good hot cross bun, you could go into your local supermarket and grab a pack for a quick fix. There’s heaps of variety too, like the sweet Caramilk buns from Woolies, or the spicy jalapeƱo and cheese buns from Coles. But, sometimes, you need to treat yourself a little, and try something truly award-winning. If you want to try the best hot cross buns in Australia, take the V/Line or drive up to Shepparton, for something truly amazing at North End Bakehouse. Last month, they took home the top prize at the Victorian Baking Show for the second year in a row.

The Vic Baking Show took place in Bendigo in late February, and keen bakers from around the state had to submit their best traditional hot cross bun. That meant no chocolate buns or other flavours, just simple, classic fruit.
North End Bakehouse took out the top spot for the second year in a row, and are officially Australia’s Best Hot Cross Bun.
The judging was based on volume, colour, fruit to dough ratio, flavour and moistness of fruit.
Meanwhile, there was also a category for Innovative Hot Cross Buns. And, wouldn’t you know it, North End Bakehouse won that too. Their creative flavour was a tasty vanilla slice hot cross bun, which will be available to purchase in April.
So, if ever you feel like a nice long drive, why don’t you pop into this bakery for a bit of brekkie?
