If you love stargazing and contemplating the wonders of the universe, Melbourne Observatory is running some stellar tours for you to enjoy this winter. Instead of braving the cold nights, you’ll get to pop by during the day and get a good look at our closest star, the Sun. Check out the Sun’s surface with the help of telescopes and learn about the history of solar astronomy. You’ll find the Solar Tours at Melbourne Observatory nestled within the Royal Botanic Gardens. Bookings are available now.
Solar Tours at Melbourne Observatory
This historic observatory has been a part of Melbourne since the early 1860s. On select nights throughout the year, the Astronomical Society of Victoria runs guided tours of this fascinating space. But now, you can experience guided tours during the day.
Learn the history of solar astronomy, and learn how to use the restored 4-inch Photoheliograph telescope, as well as the Troughton & Simms telescope. These two instruments will allow you to see stunning details on the surface of the Sun, including sunspots and solar granulation.
This experience is perfect for both first-timers and passionate space enthusiasts.
Sessions run for 90 minutes, and the Solar Tours will take place at 1pm on Sunday July 20 and August 17. Tickets are $45 for adults and $25 for children.
If you’re feeling hungry or thirsty, swing by the nearby cafe, The Observatory for pizza, brunch and European-inspired dishes.
