From moody forest roads to epic alpine adventures, Victoria is just bursting with scenic drives. And there’s one particular road trip that you should add to your to-do list, because it’s nestled between two iconic landmarks — the Snowy Mountains and the Murray River. Wind your way through 155km of high country roads along the upper reaches of the Murray River. The Great River Road runs from Bellbridge on the banks of Lake Hume to the mountain township of Khancoban, and you can travel in whichever direction suits your fancy. With plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing and camping, you’re invited to take it slow on this picturesque road trip.
The Great River Road
Meander between national and state parks and criss-cross your way over the Victorian and New South Wales border as you venture along The Great River Road. Kick off your journey in Bellbridge, and admire the heritage-listed Bethanga Bridge, as well as Xavier Pinnard’s ‘Are We There Yet’ sculpture. Then, continue along Lake Hume to the towns of Talgarno and Granya. Stretch your legs with a little detour on either the Granya Falls Walk or the Mt Granya Summit – Lyrebird Loop Nature Trail, and admire stunning waterfalls and forests.
Keep driving along the Murray to the half-way point at the Mount Alfred’s Gap Lookout, and admire the striking Wedge-tailed Eagle sculpture, one of Victoria’s many Big Things.
Then, keep following the river and briefly cross the border to visit the charming town of Jingellic, or stop for a break at the Victorian town Walwa. As you continue your journey, you’ll see stunning views of the summits of Pine Mountain, Mount Granya and Mount Mittamatite. Stop and stretch your legs at Jim Newman’s Lookout, and admire the Bogong Moth sculpture.
For more stunning views, continue past Tintaldra to Farrans Lookout, and gaze at the Snowy Mountain Ranges, surrounding farmland and the Murray River flats. During winter, it’s particularly beautiful, as you can admire the snow-capped mountains.
Stop by Towong and see the historic racecourse, which you might recognise from the movie Phar Lap. After that, journey to Corryong, the largest township of the Upper Murray and home to The Man from Snowy River Museum and the annual bush festival.
Keep going east and end your journey across the border in Khancoban, in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park. Linger in the area and explore the dam and surrounding mountains.
