Art exhibitions in Melbourne will be getting a little less immersive in the coming years, as THE LUME Melbourne has confirmed that it will close in little over a year. The world’s largest digital art gallery has delighted Melburnians for three years with its immense projections of famous artworks, such as its showcase of French Impressionism, or its exploration of First Peoples art. It’s also been the site of some other interesting experiences, such as multi-sensory wellness classes. However, that’s all coming to an end.
When will THE LUME close?
THE LUME held the lease at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), but has decided not to renew it when it ends in January 2026.
In an email addressed to staff, it was revealed that this decision was made due to challenging economic conditions, the cost of reinventing in technology and challenges to the suitability of MCEC as a venue.
In a statement to the media, THE LUME Melbourne said, “This decision, made in alignment with our parent company, Grande Experiences, reflects our ambition to explore new directions and technologies that build on our success here in Melbourne.”
They added, “Looking forward, THE LUME is excited to embrace new technologies that deepen connections with our audiences and will transform the way visitors engage with art and culture. This evolution will guide us toward opportunities best suited to support these creative possibilities.”
There is no word yet on what will happen next.
What exhibitions are currently running?
We’re currently in the final few weeks of Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius. It’s running until December 8, 2024, and features iconic artworks like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, as well as a nifty VR experience that sends you soaring over medieval Florence.
After that, we’re going back to where it all started, with the return of the Van Gogh exhibition. This popular exhibition will feature some cool new stuff, including a shared virtual reality experience and a new Starry Night room. It will open on Boxing Day, and tickets are currently available until June 1, 2025.
As we approach January 2026, we will keep you updated on any developments.
