We love going on outdoor adventures and exploring national parks. And Great Otway National Park is particularly special. Located off the Great Ocean Road, it’s home to glimmering glow worms, stunning waterfalls, lush fern gullies and even a towering redwood forest. These giant Californian trees were first planted in 1936 as an experiment by Victorian foresters, and now, they stand over 60 metres tall. The Redwoods in the Otways are located in Beech Forest, roughly 2.5 hours away from Melbourne.

The Redwoods Otways
You’ll feel like you’ve landed in a fairy tale as you venture deep into the Otways and encounter these magnificent trees. Unlike the rest of the Otways, which is filled with native rainforest, this plantation features rows of towering trees, a lack of undergrowth and muffled sounds, making you feel lost in your own little world. The Redwoods were planted on a sheltered, flat section by Aire River over 85 years ago, and have thrived in the area thanks to high rainfall.
Walk beneath the canopy and turn your eyes to the skies to see just how high the trees go. Feel awestruck by their beauty, and breathe in the crisp forest air as you amble between the trees and along the gentle river. Here and there, you’ll find some fallen tree trunks, which make a great spot for photos. It’s best to wear sturdy shoes, as it can get quite slippery after rainfall.
There is a picnic area, so you’re welcome to bring something to nibble on. Just remember to take all of your rubbish with you.

More info
This tranquil spot is stunning all year round. It does get popular, particularly during the summer period and on weekends. In winter, the cool air and rain adds an otherworldly atmosphere. There is a limited number of parking spots available, so aim to visit during off-peak times, such as early in the morning. It’s best to go to the bathroom before you visit, as the toilet is a pit one. Dogs aren’t permitted to come along.
While you’re in the area, don’t miss the stunning Hopetoun Falls nearby, which is just a 3 minute drive away.
If you love this experience, there’s also a spectacular Redwood Forest located in Melbourne’s east, near Warburton.
