Due to massive demand, cult classic musical The Rocky Horror Show will return to Melbourne in 2024. After a fantastic season earlier this year, the show will continue their 50th anniversary world tour with a return to Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre from February 9 and Theatre Royal Sydney from March 31.
The iconic and chaotic musical first opened in London in 1973, to an audience of just 63 people. Now, 50 years later, it has a loyal group of fans across generations who will happily dress up, dance to the time warp and participate in audience call backs. Whether you’re a long-time fan, or you’re curious to know what all the fuss is about, a night at The Rocky Horror Show is worth checking out.
The Rocky Horror Show
The Rocky Horror Show is the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two college kids who meet Dr Frank N Furter — an extra-terrestrial mad scientist from the galaxy of Transylvania where people love to party. What follows is tons of fun, adventure, timeless songs and over-the-top outfits.
Jason Donovan, who played Frank N Furter on stage in 1998, has reprised his role for the 50th anniversary and will be back for the return season. Also returning will be Deirdre Khoo as Janet, Stellar Perry as Magenta/The Usherette, Henry Rollo as Riff Raff, Darcey Eagle as Columbia and Ellis Dolan as Eddie/Dr Scott. Joining them in 2024 will be Blake Bowden as Brad and Daniel Erbacher as Rocky.
The creative team features director Christopher Luscombe, set designer Hugh Durrant, costume designer Sue Blane and choreographer Nathan M Wright with music by Richard Hartley.
In the past 50 years, The Rocky Horror Show has played in over 30 countries, been translated into 20 languages, and been seen by over 30 million people. In 1975, it was adapted for cinema with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film adaptation is still shown in cinemas around the world, making it the longest running theatrical release in cinema history.
