Whisk yourself away to beautiful Yarra Valley and unwind with a tipple or two from one of its many wineries. Located around an hour away from Melbourne, this marvellous region has mountains on either side, creating stunning views and excellent conditions for winemaking. Dotted across the Yarra Valley, you’ll find an abundance of wineries, making all sorts of unique flavour profiles thanks to the varying types of elevation and soil. This cool-climate region has over 80 wineries to choose from, stretching all over the valley from Yarra Glen to Seville. We’ve put together some of our favourite places to get you started. Some of these venues have accommodation on-site, so you can embark on a weekend getaway. And, if you’d prefer to leave the car behind, there’s also hop-on, hop-off bus options.
1. Balgownie Estate
You’ll find everything you need at Balgownie Estate. This award-winning Yarra Valley winery has 17 acres of sprawling vineyards, as well as a bar, restaurant, cellar door, spa and hotel. The hotel has 70 rooms and suites to choose from, and is a great base to explore the rest of the Yarra Valley region. The vineyard itself is dedicated to creating Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but you’ll also find other varieties to try at their cellar door. Visit their restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and sit out on the deck to take in sweeping views of the region. If you’d like to indulge a little further, check out the endota spa on-site for some relaxing treatments.

2. Domaine Chandon
Chandon first set up their Australian home in the Yarra Valley in 1986. Since then, they have created an extensive collection of mΓ©thode traditionnelle sparkling wines. Visit Domaine Chandon and take part in wine tastings and dreamy dining experiences in the restaurant and lounge bar. Treat yourself to a decadent sparkling brunch, complete with sparkling mimosas, and learn a bit more about winemaking in their Behind the Bubbles experience.

3. Yering Station
Not sure where to start? Why don’t you check out Victoria’s first vineyard, Yering Station? The vines were first planted in 1838, and now, they own five vineyard sites across Yarra Glen and Coldstream. The different sites have subtle changes in soil, aspect and elevation, leading to a variety of cool climate wines. Check out their heritage cellar door to learn more, or enjoy a leisurely meal in their signature restaurant. There’s also a delightful garden bar open during the warmer months, as well as art and sculptures on display throughout the gardens and cellar door.

4. St Hubert’s
St Hubert’s was one of the earliest wineries in the Yarra Valley. Established in 1862, they’re renowned for their Cabernet Sauvignon, but also produce other types of wine like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Roussanne. Indulge in cheese and charcuterie alongside a wine tasting at their cellar door, then feast on seasonal dishes at their restaurant on Hubert Estate.

5. Soumah of Yarra Valley
You’ll find a taste of Italy at Soumah of Yarra Valley. This winery has a range of northern Italian varieties and styles for you to try, such as Brachetto, Nebbiolo and Pinot Grigio. They also have some eastern French varieties, like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz. There’s a variety of wine tastings for you to take part in at the cellar door and private tastings available in the Premium Wine Room. Feast on northern Italian cuisine at their restaurant, Ai Fiori Trattoria, and stay overnight in their spacious Villa Sophia.

6. De Bortoli Wines
The De Bortoli family has been making wine for over 90 years, starting their journey in New South Wales. They purchased their Yarra Valley vineyard in 1987, and now have over 170 hectares of predominantly Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Take part in daily wine tastings at their cellar door, and enjoy Italian-inspired dishes at their restaurant, Locale. De Bortoli Wines also have a variety of experiences for you to try, including a cooking class and a behind the scenes tour.

7. TarraWarra Estate
TarraWarra Estate is a massive, 400-hectare property, with 26 hectares of vines, a subterranean cellar door, a restaurant, a kitchen garden and more. Take part in wine tasting at the cellar door, then indulge in a seasonal menu at their restaurant. For a full day out, pop over to the TarraWarra Museum of Art next door.

8. Zonzo Estate
The team at Zonzo Estate converted an empty urban warehouse in 2019 to create a more sustainable winery. Their eco-conscious approach uses a variety of methods, including self-sustaining water, to create a more sustainable approach to winemaking. Their vintages are made in small batches and by hand, leading to slight changes every season. There’s a whole range of varieties for you to try, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and sparkling, which pair perfectly with the Italian dishes at their restaurant.

9. Helen & Joey Estate
Helen & Joey Estate produces aromatic and fruit-forward wine from their 200-acre site. Pop into their cellar door for a bespoke tasting session, and sample premium varietals in the downstairs tasting room. Visit the Re’em restaurant for seasonal Australian produce, and dishes that honour Helen and Joey’s Chinese heritage. Each item on the menu is designed to pair perfectly with the estate’s wine. Stay overnight at their boutique hotel, which has 16 rooms.

10. Oakridge Winery
Renowned for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the award-winning Oakridge Winery uses traditional and sustainable methods to produce their wine. Visit their cellar door for tastings, flights and masterclasses. Then, visit their hatted restaurant for a seasonal menu. Feast on items made in-house, such as cheeses, breads and fermented goods, with ingredients from their kitchen garden. You’ll also find a casual menu out on The Terrace.

11. Maddens Rise
This artisan winery focuses on creating wines that truly reflect their place in the Yarra Valley. Maddens Rise make decisions based on the fruit and climate of each season. They use biological farming practices, hand picked grapes and small batch fermentation to create their wines. Make a booking to visit their petite cellar door for an intimate wine tasting experience.

12. Coombe Yarra Valley
The historic Coombe Yarra Valley was once the home of famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba. Established in 1909, the picturesque venue has a cellar door, restaurant, cottage and 100-year-old gardens for you to explore. Take a guided tour and learn about its history, then, head into the cellar door and try their wine. The Coombe Farm vineyards are just 5km north of the estate, and stretch out to 120 acres. They make Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as Shiraz and Cabernet. Unwind at the restaurant for an indulgent lunch or high tea.

13. Tokar Estate
The family-owned Tokar Estate has a winery, restaurant and cellar door in Coldstream. They have 30 acres under vine, producing varieties like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Taste five wines in the cellar door, and pair it with cheese and charcuterie items. During the warmer months, there’s picnic rugs available to borrow, as well as cosy fire pits in winter. Tuck into a seasonal menu at their restaurant, and stay overnight for a weekend getaway.

14. Jayden Ong Winery & Cellar Bar
Head to Healesville and have a stellar time at Jayden Ong Winery & Cellar Bar. Take part in their tasting experience, and discover the four ranges of wine made in-house. Stick around for lunch or dinner, and feast on delicious food made from simply cooked, premium ingredients. At the bar, you’ll find the four types of wine, as well as local and international options, local beer and cocktails.

15. Innocent Bystander
Discover an urban cellar door, restaurant and bar in one space at Innocent Bystander. Their vineyards in the Yarra Valley stretch over 2,800 hectares. Take part in wine tastings, and choose from their extensive range of Pinot Noir, Moscato, Chardonnay and more. Pair them with flavoursome dishes for dining or grazing at their restaurant. Indulge in charcuterie, wood-fired pizzas, seafood, and more.

16. Seville Estate
The first vineyard at Seville Estate was planted in 1972, and over the years, has grown to create award-winning wines. Their ten-hectare vineyard has a few varieties for you to try, including Chardonnay, Shiraz, Riesling and Pinot Noir. At their restaurant, you’ll find chefs in residence, serving up shared-style feasts to pair with the wines. The menu changes each week. There’s also accommodation available if you wish to stay overnight.

17. Panton Hill Vineyard & Winery
Travel just 35 minutes away from Melbourne CBD to the stunning Panton Hill Vineyard & Winery. The timeless architecture, made from sandstone and recycled timber, will make you feel transported to Southern Europe. Take part in wine tasting and find something for every preference, including dry, sweet, sparkling and fortified. On Saturdays, enjoy a laid-back Mediterranean menu. On Sundays, the kitchen is closed, but you’re welcome to bring your own picnic to enjoy with the wine.

18. Giant Steps
Sip on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at Giant Steps. They have six different vineyards scattered around the Yarra Valley, using the unique characteristics of each location to express themselves in the wine. There’s a few different tasting experiences to choose from, so that you can learn more about it.
