Autumn has arrived, and if you’re keen to soak in the vibrant colours of this splendid season, there’s lots of lovely places around Melbourne for you to admire the autumn leaves. And if a pretty garden is what you’re after, there’s a gorgeous place nestled in the Dandenong Ranges that bursts into a riot of colour during the season. Take a stroll through the magnificent Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens, and admire the array of maple, beech and ginkgo trees. If you’re searching for the perfect Instagram shot, the ornamental lake and the boathouse provide a gorgeous backdrop. It’s free to visit, and open daily.

Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens
This tranquil, 13-hectare garden was established in the late 1920s and early 1930s by the late Alfred Nicholas, and was transferred to the State in 1973. Nestled beside the historic Burnham Beeches estate, this garden is known for its theatrical water features.
Wind your way along the sloping paths, beneath a canopy of towering mountain ash trees, and let them guide you to the picturesque ornamental lake, which has a charming boathouse as well as little bridges and islands.

Around the lake, you’ll find golden ginkgo trees, which steadily cover the water with their bright leaves. You’ll also find fiery red and orange leaves from the garden’s maple and beech trees.
Pack a picnic to enjoy on the lawn while you’re there, or pause in the gazebo and admire a sculpture by Mark Stoner.
Planning your visit

If you’re keen to see the autumn colours, the best time to visit is typically from mid-April to early May. Although, some trees will already start to change their colour in late March. As this is a natural event, the timing and the intensity of the colours can change each year.
With so many splendid colours, this garden does get popular on autumn weekends. Try to arrive on a weekday for a more serene experience. Or, try to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Parking is available across the road from the main entrance.
Dogs are welcome to come along, as long as they’re on a leash. Please take all of your rubbish with you, as there are no bins on site.
Please note that while the top of the garden has sealed paths for accessibility, the rest of the garden may be challenging. It’s set on a hilly terrain, and the steep paths down to the lake are unsealed, and not recommended for those with limited mobility.
