The first stage of the Greenline project is now complete, and Birrarung Marr has a fresh new look. Stroll along the edge of the Yarra on a new, six-metre-wide promenade, and weave your way through a variety of native trees and plants. This stunning space stretches from Batman Avenue to the eastern edge of Fed Square.

Birrarung Marr transformed as part of Greenline project
Birrarung Marr is one of five interconnected precincts that will create a 4km riverside pathway as part of the Greenline Project. When it’s complete, Melburnians will be able to walk or cycle from Birrarung Marr to Bolte Bridge along a continuous green stretch. Now that the first stage is complete, preparation for the next phase will begin shortly. Melbourne City Council will turn their focus to the space between Birrarung Marr and King Street Bridge.

Follow the curve of the Yarra River along the spacious boardwalks, take a seat on one of the benches and watch the boats drift by, or pack a picnic to enjoy in this inner-city space. This 450-metre section of the riverbank now has over 70 new native trees, and over 25,000 native plants for you to admire.
When you’re not relaxing by the river, explore 900 square metres of lawn, garden beds, seating and shaded resting areas.
The upgrade also celebrates the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung connection to Country, with design elements that provide an opportunity for shared storytelling of place and appreciation of indigenous flora and fauna.

After enjoying a casual visit, be sure to pop by throughout the year for some of Melbourne’s most iconic events, such as Moomba Festival, the Australian Open and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
