From along the coast to through the forest, there’s so many stunning walks to try around Victoria. And if you love going for easy strolls, why don’t you try out the tranquil Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk? Nestled within Toolangi State Forest, roughly 20 minutes away from Healesville, this popular circuit will take you through cool temperate rainforest. 450 metres of the trail is a boardwalk, making it accessible for wheelchairs and prams. This short and sweet walk is also a great choice for families with little ones, as it’s just a 700 metre return journey. Don’t forget to bring your dog! Pups are welcome to come along, as long as they’re on a leash.
Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk
From the carpark, follow the short dirt track to the start of the boardwalk. From there, you’ll journey beneath a dense canopy of ancient myrtle beech trees and southern sassafras. Breathe in the cool, damp air all year round, and admire the thriving ferns, mosses and fungi. As you amble along, listen out for the sounds of lyrebirds, and the tumbling flow of Sylvia Creek.
Near the carpark, you’ll also find picnic facilities, a shelter and a toilet.
If you’re keen for a longer hike, the Wirrawilla carpark also has access to the Myrtle Gully Circuit or the Tanglefoot Loop. The Myrtle Gully Circuit is roughly eight kilometres long and takes around two to three hours to complete, and features boardwalks and creek crossings. Wear appropriate hiking shoes for this one, as the track can get quite muddy. This circuit can be combined with the Tanglefoot Loop for a much longer walk. Otherwise, the Tanglefoot Loop is approximately ten kilometres long, and takes about three hours to complete. This trail will take you through the forest and down gullies. Once again, proper shoes will be needed as it can get quite muddy.

What else can you do?

While you’re in the area, go on a short walk to see the Kalatha Giant Tree. This 500 metre return journey will take you to the towering mountain ash tree, which is estimated to be over 350 years old and 73 metres tall. This track does feature steps, so it’s not accessible, but dogs are welcome to come along.
Drive about ten minutes away from the Wirrawilla walk to see the Toolangi Sculpture Trail. Walk through the forest and see a variety of artworks in various stages of decay, as intended by the creators.
While you’re in the east, you’ll find other remarkable attractions in the area, such as the iconic Black Spur Drive, Steavenson Falls near Marysville and the Redwood Forest near Warburton. If you’re tired from all the adventures outdoors, return to Healesville and the Yarra Valley for a glass of wine.
